Thoughts with Joanna:
On who we are, and who we may yet become
September 2026. Maison FAWO
Some parts of the self take shape in our encounters with the world; others come into view only slowly, when the gaze turns back on itself.
We understand ourselves through what we have already lived. Familiar choices, preferences and beliefs give "who I am" a stable form, and let us recognize ourselves in the ordinary hours of a day. But time moves on, new experience keeps arriving, and understandings that once felt settled can loosen, quietly, in certain moments.
Some change comes from looking outward — entering situations we have never been in, meeting different people and different things, and growing, within them, into a new shape. Some knowing comes from looking inward: when attention returns to the self, the parts that were always there but never properly noticed begin to surface.
We recognize the self that was already here, and at the same time, in new experience, go on becoming a self we do not yet know. Perhaps knowing ourselves was never a matter of finding a fixed answer, but of continuing to understand who we are at this moment — between seeing and becoming.

In what ways did you become braver this year?
It happened on a pickleball court.
Racquet sports were new to me. A year and a half ago, I chose that unfamiliar challenge on purpose.
The early sessions were clumsy, but with steady practice I felt my body slowly learn the game, and in the end I found the courage to step onto the court for a real match. What I took from it is that becoming braver doesn't have to be grand. Being willing to step past the unfamiliar is already brave.
What are you quietly working on right now?
Challenging myself, and at the same time enjoying every chance to learn something new.
I've found that staying with something is how love for it grows. In pickleball, every run and every stroke, every rush of exhilaration, every time I notice I've picked up one more skill or one more way of reading the game, feels like a conversation with myself, a glimpse of another self I could be.
I want to build on this slowly, and hope that one day, within something I love this much, I'll have something bright to show for it.
“The self becomes fluid in contact with the world.
Some shapes are found there,
while others emerge through doing.”
Whose life would you most like to step into for a day, and why?
I've never wanted to live someone else's life.
I'd rather keep my attention, which is precious, inside my own world, give it to each moment as it happens, and live there without holding anything back. So I make a point of turning my gaze back to my own life.
And when I stay with my own life, I can see it more clearly: this self has an outline of its own, distinct and defined.
“A curious gaze turned toward the self lets
what has gone unnoticed be seen,
and brings into focus what was there all along.”
Maison Fawo
Maison Fawo brings that same curious gaze to every stone.
We look at its lustre, its shape, its character, in no hurry to decide what it should become. Between looking and imagining, the stone is left free to reveal a different possibility.
If one piece of jewelry stayed with you for years, what would it remind you of?
A necklace.
It rests close to the heart, a faint shimmer lying along the collarbone, and it has always been a comfort to me.
Strung link by link, it feels like effort gathered up and set into each small diamond, carrying a weight you can actually feel, reminding me to savour every moment I'm in.
“Rather than defining who we are, perhaps it is enough to stay curious about who we are still becoming.”
We always live with some understanding of ourselves, and what we do, what we feel, how others see us, even a glance back at the past — all of it can set that understanding moving.
Sometimes we find a self we have never seen before; sometimes we grow more certain of the self we already knew; sometimes, in the doing, we slowly become someone else.
And in paying this kind of attention, there is no hurry to turn who we are into a final answer.
